Friday pm I got a call from Millie L, a friend of mine. Millie is a 65yo
black lady who I disagree with on almost everything. In fact there are
things we just don't talk about at all. Strange as it seems we are the
best of friends.
Millie has been in pore health the last few years and
can no longer drive. In the last 2 years her mother one aunt and a
grandson have died. Her oldest relative came to town with a friend and
was leaving Sunday. Millie had not been able to get to the hotel to
see her and called me to ask if I would pick her up and take them both
to lunch. I didn't want to but what the hell, she is a friend, so I did.
The aunt, Aunt Nancy is 84 and as sharp as can be. Her and her husband,
now dead, moved to Cleveland Ohio from Alabama 64 years ago. They built
a 4 story house that she still lives in today. They were the first of
the family to get out of the south.
Her grandparents had been slaves and She and her husband
were the first of the family to follow them north.
Almost everyone in the family has lived in that house at one time or another. Millie and I took her back to her hotel and I let Millie off at home.
I got a chance to look at the world in just a little different way than I ever
had before. Not bad for a Saturday. Life on earth 2/10/01
That was 2001. Aunt Nancy died the next year. Millie now lives in a senior home near her oldest daughter in Pasadena CA. We still talk on the phone and I get out to see her about once a year.
One of the happiest phone calls was to congratulate her when Obama was elected. Quite a day for a woman born in the "Old south" in the 30's.
