A big question is what is your budget? That'll have the most impact on what you buy. I'm a Nikon fan myself, and some of the newest Nikons and Canons have the ability to do both photos and high quality video. Another good thing about DSLR is once you have the camera and several lenses, when you decide to upgrade you can keep using the same set of lenses assuming you stick with the same brand.
I'd go with Nikon or Canon, both great cameras.

expensive dslr body + cheap lens = crappy pictures.
Secretly I don't think any digital cameras can top my good old olympus OM-1 and Zukio lenses for amazing pictures, but they sure are convenient and pretty darn good. In the DSLR space I'm partial to canons, but nikons are great too. As a 30 yr and counting Olympus fanboy I have to confess, their DSLRs leave a lot to be desired, I would steer clear of them (sob).

I have no experience of GE camera's but before I got my SLR I had a Fuji bridge camera which was v good. So something like the Finepix s4000

And if I where 'shooting professionally' I would not be sharing that pic on the net! I could take a better one on my mobile!
