Of all the slashers, I think the original Halloween is tops, only because they don't give a half-assed explanation for what the guy does what he does. He's simply Evil on two legs. The sequels fucked it up, naturally...

Speaking of Zombies, gotta give a nod to George Romero. Especially Dawn of the Dead; my brother and I both loved that one.

As much as everyone raves about Psycho, and rightfully so, I think The Birds deserves a look. Some very effective shots and sequences, and the fact that no explanation is given adds to the spook factor, I think.

My parents were pretty easygoing on what my brother and I watched; they were confident that we weren't gonna go around shooting up the neighborhood, and my dad's philosophy on profanity was simple: "You're gonna hear it, just don't let me hear you saying it."
Chainsaw was rough to sit through, though. And honestly, I've seen more blood fly on screen in PG movies than that one, but that's a hard movie. Good one, though.

Problem with that is, so few of the movies are as good as the books. There are some exceptions, though. Carrie and Misery come to mind. And I also liked Cujo and Dead Zone
