My thought is that if a relationship fails the first time around, there is normally a good enough reason that the two should stay apart. Getting back together is just weakness and missing that person, but it will most likely set you up to get hurt again. But that's just my opinion, and I could be totally wrong. Your thoughts?

So no, second chances don't work.

But our break ups weren't standard. We didn't fight or lose interest or something like that. We were both very young and in a long distance relationship, and just couldn't manage it. We're still pretty young, but we've gotten to an age where our parents approve of us dating and meeting, so it's a lot easier to deal with being apart.
Now, granting someone a second chance if they were abusive or very selfish the first time? Different story. All depends on what happened the first time around, and why things ended.

If things go beyond repair (break off), a second chance is invitation to emotional abuse.
