I've been with my guy since October '06 (three-and-a-half years in April), and we did long distance from October '06 through December '07 and from August/September '09 through now (and we continue to do long distance and will continue until we move back in together this summer). We lived together between long distance sessions from December '07 through August/September '09 when he moved out of our apartment and moved back home for a job (while I have to stay where I am for my job until this summer when the school year is over because I'm a teacher).
Granted, long distance relationships aren't going to work for everyone, but my SO and I are crazy in love and adore each other, and we make every effort to have as much sex as possible when we do get to see each other, and we talk every day (even if only for a few minutes to say good night or whatever), so our relationship - long distance as it currently is - is as strong as it has ever been, and we're engaged now.
However, I'll gladly admit that - as I said - long distance definitely doesn't work for everyone. I can guarantee that it's very hard work to maintain, so it really depends on whether or not you and your partner are capable of putting in the time AND willing to put in the effort and deal with the emotional strain of being apart a lot.
