this may be a dumb question, but is more protection safer? I know doubling up condoms doesn't work, but is using a condom, and birth control pills a lot safer than just a condom?

Most young and inexperienced people dont know how to put on a condom... it takes much practice. You have to learn how to put moisture in the tip and all.
Too much moisture and Ive heard of them slipping off... also, they have slipped off of me; pregnancy can happen if the condom gets lost inside her.
STDs, if she has a herpes outbreak in and around her privates condoms wont protect against open sores. Often the condom isn't at the base of the penis.
** edit: AIDS/HIV, all it takes is for a ((BLEEPED by Q , post another remark like that & I'll ban you))to have sex with your girl or guy - then you might get it.
I recently read that the increase in AIDS/HIV cases was in 20-25 yr olds. I admit at that age everything looks so good and fresh... yummy - you want to taste it all.
"American Pie" gets you to have sex --- don't buy it hook, line and sinker.
Safe sex, that is masturbation - for years? Sure. It even helps you have better sex when you are in a relationship. Plus, you know what feels best.
Also, mutual masturbation with your BF/GF. Then after STD testing - oral sex.
About BC pills and chemical methods... some girls get spots on their body and face... it's added hormones .
