My question is:
Does anyone find the idea of paying for sex low-class, pathetic, etc., regardless of the reasons for it? Or do find such an industry acceptable? Reasons for your opinions please.

The latter I find sort of pathetic. I would honestly have a hard time being with a guy that I knew has been visiting hookers. I really have no idea why I have this hang-up though. If a guy is unable to form or sustain a "normal" sexual relationship for some reason, then I feel that him visiting a hooker is "OK"
The reason why I deleted my lengthy reply was because my reasoning sounded so stupid, I didn't want to post it. Reading this second draft, it's starting to sound stupid again, so I'm just going to stop now and press "Post"
This is just the way I feel, I guess it doesn't have to make sense...

the OP said 'a symbol of' the country's moral decay. just cause something has been around for a long doesn't make it right. i don't know it's like in the US, but in australia, the legalisation of brothels in some states only happened in this past decade. but, if something, in this case prostitution, has traditionally a negative stigma to it, doesn't that make you wonder why? that perhaps socially, it was not a good from a long time ago. the fact that it is becoming more accepted, does show a moral decay.

Personally I have no interest at all in brothels or paying for sex.
However I did end up in two while I was there, a long story.
Basically my experience was as follows.
Sitting a bar, a naked girl dancing on the bar with harcore porn playing on the tv behind her.
Behind me were a bunch of prostitutes sitting down waiting for me to approach them or else they would approach you.
€40 would get you anything you want.
It's not my scene at all so I just told the girls I am gay and to leave me alone while my mates had some fun.
I personally don't get them but in fairness I was the only guy in a relationship on that trip but I'd like to think I'd never pay for it.

I don't think it's pathetic or low brow. Hookers are sex professionals and can probably give you a really, really good lay if you have the money. Whats wrong with going to a professional for the best service you can get?
