I'd add that, having a relationship with you son where he feels open to talk to you about what's happening in his life (including sex and associated subjects) will hopefully allow you both to have an open trouble free relationship.
With regards to the feeling of being ashamed and guilty, in my opinion, they probably came from adult figures in you life and their views, values and your perseptions of their views. If you've brought you son up with different views, values and preseptions then I'd guess the feeling of guilt and being ashamed may not be feelings your son is having. I'd therefore tred lightly when/if you have a talk.
