Toilet Seat Up or Down? Does it matter?

I had no problem with doing things their way in their own house but was not informed ahead time of this and saw no rules posted. Did not like being talked down to by someone half my age over something so trivial (wasn't like I sprayed urine all over the place, I've got great aim).
Girlfriend said "fuck this" and dragged me out the house leaving both of their jaws hanging.
Throughout my lifetime I have been in literally thousands of bathrooms in thousands of homes and have never heard anyone complain or even request this before. I honestly thought this was an old cliche. It seems if you go in and you need to sit down and the seat is up, you put it down. If you need the seat up and it is down, you put it up. Are there people (especially woman) who don't look at a toilet before sitting down and end up wedged into the bowl?
Just curious if this is really a big deal for a lot of people like it is for cuz's wife?

I agree with this for the most part. I prefer it down, too - especially at night. If I get out of bed in the middle of the night, I'm not turning on the light in the bathroom. If I try to go to the bathroom and fall into the toilet, I'm going to be a little pissed. But when the light is on or during the day or whatever, I can clearly see the seat is up, and I won't be falling in, LOL. In that case, I'll just put it down myself, and I'd probably just ask him, "Hey, honey, could you please try to remember to put the seat down next time?" But I certainly wouldn't freak out like she did. That's just unreasonable, and there are too many other things to worry about in life that are so much more important.

The man should put the seat down when he's done, and the woman should put the seat up when she's done. Why? Cause odds are it will be the other person using bathroom next. Why should the guy not only put the seat down when he's finished but put the seat up when he needs to use it? And the woman can just walk right in and plop herself down.
Now, yes, it's not that big of deal or effort for the guy to do that but it's the principle of the matter. Why does the man have to respect the procedures of the woman in the bathroom, but the woman doesn't have to respect the procedures of the man?
Anyhoo, I close the lid before I flush.
