Meditation was the first skill that I have learned on my spiritual journey, I would never live a life without this amazing tool. Before meditation, my mind was out of control, I was depressed and I didn't know what life was all about. All of my relationships were going down the hill, I was angry, upset, and was getting chest pains from all the stress. Meditation has taught me to be calm, to relax in stressful situations, and to control my thoughts. The first thing you need to do is find space and time in your day, find a room where you can be alone for 20 minutes and not be disturbed. Wearing comfortable clothing that won't be a distraction, or wear nothing at all if that is comfortable to you. How you sit is not important, long as you are in a relaxed position (I do not recommend laying down and meditating as you may fall asleep). Also I don't find it important to have your palms facing up, no matter how you are sitting, no matter how your hands are adjusted energy will always enter and exit your body. The most basic meditation that I find is focusing on your own breathing, imagining the air is going in your nose down to your lungs and then back out through your mouth. You may breathe in and hold for 5-10 seconds, I would recommend starting at a number you feel most comfortable with and then breathe out and hold for the same seconds. This may make you feel more energized, only do this exercise a few times and then go back to controlled breathing. Imagination will help you concentrate and clear other thoughts, I started by focusing on a red ball in my mind, as it helped me to concentrate on one thing. Tell your mind you will get back to other thoughts later, a good way to do this is to imagine you putting all the other thoughts into an empty box and returning to the box later on. You have to actually tell your mind what to do, if not your mind will wonder and you will have a hard time concentrating on one thing. Telling your mind you are safe, and you also have to tell your mind and body to relax, I start feet to head by relaxing each body part at a time. Feet, Knees, Thighs, Hips, Stomach, Chest, Shoulders, Hands, Arms, Neck, Face, once your body is relaxed and safe you will start to drift off into total subconsciousness. If you feel your mind has been altered from normal state of mind, congratulations my friend, you are meditating. Practicing this will make it easier to get into this altered state of mind in which we call meditation. Practicing meditation can teach you to reverse your stress response by shielding you from the effects of chronic stress. Meditation can also be useful for other challenges in life, controlling bad habits and even focusing on the person you want to be in life. When you are ready to get out of your altered state of mind, slowly become alert and slowly open your eyes. Take a few deep breaths before you get up and slowly move your body back to normal.
