After years of being friends, Jay asked me to go on a date with him. Now this may not sound like a big deal but when you grow up with someone and see them every day you generally just see them as friends. But something happened during the last few weeks of school that changed that.
We were no longer just playing soccer in the backyard with friends. We were no longer running through the woods playing hide and seek and we were no longer doing those things that normally come with growing up in any town in the world.
What we were doing was being kind of awkward. Jay use to bump into me every time he saw me or cut in front of me when we were getting on the bus. Now he was stepping to the side and letting me go in front of him. He use to get on the bus and grab a seat by himself and sprawl out so no one else could sit with him, now he was making a point to sit next to me. At school he use to ignore me but now he was making a point to walk me to my classes.
When Jay walked me home from the bus and couldn’t talk I knew something was up. In all the time we had known each other he would never shut up. There was always some chatter about this football player or that. Something about how he made the varsity Lacrosse team or was going this special workout. He would always be saying how he thought some girl liked him.
“Ka . . . Ka,” Jay croaked out then tried to clear his throat. “Cami,” Jay croaked out.
I laughed and teased him, “Talk much.”
“Forget it,” Jay continued while turning red and looking down at the ground.
“No, what?” I asked.
“Nothing! Forget it,” Jay insisted. “Just let it go.”
I quickly hopped on front of Jay to block his path and without so much as looking at me tried to turn to the side to get around me. I jumped in front of him again and grabbed him by his wrists.
“What? Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me. Please.” I insisted looking into his eyes.
“Forget it. It’s stupid and you wouldn’t want to anyway,” Jay murmured.
“I’m sorry I teased you,” I said and turned to start walking again.
“Do you want to go to walk down to the lake and go for a swim?” Jay blurted out.
“Sure. Let me text everyone and . . .” I started to say but Jay stopped me.
“No. Just you and me. Like us. Together,” Jay blurted out.
It suddenly hit me. I knew why Jay had been so awkward and uncomfortable. I knew why he sat next to me and why he walked me to my classes. He had a crush on me.
Now it was my turn to be uncomfortable as my heart moved up into my throat.
“Okay,” I said with a smile. “Let me go change. Do you want to take the path or the road? It doesn’t matter. I mean they both work. The path is faster I guess. We can . . .” I couldn’t stop myself. The words were spilling from my mouth and overflowing into non-stop thoughts.
Jay smiled at me and laughed. “Oh my God. I’ve lived here as long as you. I know how to get to the lake.”
He wrapped his arms around me in a hug. Not a hug of friends saying ‘Bye’ when they as done hanging out for the day but it was a real hug. I wrapped my arms around him and pressed my head into his chest.
“I’ll be ready in about 10 minutes,” I said as I turned to go into my house. “Wait! Where are we going to meet? The path or the road?”
“How about I come and get you?”
A smile spread across my face and I blushed while dipping my head. “Okay.”
It was the first time someone was going to actually come to get me. Sure Jay had knocked on my door a thousand times before but this was different. He wasn’t coming with ten other people to play soccer. He was coming by himself. And he was coming for me.
As I walked toward my house my insides were doing cartwheels. I wanted to run as fast as I could. I wanted to sprint into the house and find my cutest bathing suit. I wanted to check my make-up and fix my hair.
Suddenly I stumbled over a rock that my dad had put on the side of the driveway and very gracelessly fell.
I jumped back up and yelled “Ta-Da”.
Jay was smiling and laughing and mouthed, “You’re such a goof. 10 minutes.”
Once I got into the house it was like an explosion went off. I flew up the stairs and into my room. I launched my backpack toward my bed with a little too much energy and it crashed into the wall and fall onto my bed. I flung open my closet and started tearing into the stacks of crumpled clothes looking for a swimsuit. The first one that I grabbed with a pink one piece with flowers on it.
“Ugh,” I grunted.
I knew what I wanted but needed to find it. I had a brand new bikini but it was buried under all my clothes. I was just a simple black bikini but it was the first time I would ever be wearing a bikini. It was the first time my dad allowed me to buy a bikini and I fully planned on taking advantage of that decision
Once I found it I slammed the closet door and started to undress. I kicked my boots off and in one motion my pants and panties followed. In the next motion I reached behind me and undid my bra and pulled my camisole and bra off.
I pulled my bikini bottoms on and stopped while looking at myself in the mirror.
“Oh, fuck! I look like a Yeti.” my unshaved pubic hair was attempting to escape the confines of the tiny piece of material that covered my naughty bits.
Running into the bathroom I pushed my bikini bottoms down and grabbed a razor. I started to shave. I started trying to just trim things but came to the conclusion that I had trimmed it so much that I had a very crooked line of hair as my pubic patch.
I shook my head while looking at myself in the mirror and proceeded to trim it off. I grabbed some lotion and worked it in on my thighs, between my legs and where my pubic mound once was. I shook my head and thought “Ick, that looks gross.”
I pulled my bikini bottoms back on and took off running for my bedroom. I tore the store tag off and was starting to tie the neck strap when the doorbell rang.
“Fuck. Not yet,” yelled at no one.
I opened my bedroom window and stuck my head out to see Jay on the porch.
“Jay, come on in. I’ll be down in a second,” I yelled out and slammed the window closed.
I put my bikini top on, covered that with a sheer white camisole and a pair of Daisy Duke jean shorts. Grabbing my beach bag and took off down the stairs.
“Wow! You look really ha . . . cute,” Jay said as I turned the corner.
Not really hearing Jay’s compliment I skipped out the door with Jay in tow.
We walked down the path to get to the lake in relative silence. We had both gone from being chatterboxes to being unable to make the simplest of conversation. When we did finally say something it was very terse and didn’t reveal much about what the other was thinking.
Jay who normally ran ahead and dove off the dock before anyone else stayed back and helped me layout my blanket and towel. I kicked off my sandals and unbutton my shorts. I couldn’t see Jay looking but I could tell he was watching every move I was making. I bent over at the waist and picked up my shorts and placed them in my beach bag then fixed my bikini bottoms. When I started to take my camisole off I glanced at Jay and gave a twisted smile and pulled it over my head.
“A bikini? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you on a bikini before.”
“Is it okay? Do you like it?”
“Hell yeah. You’re fucking hot,” Jay chuckled.
I bashful smile started to cross my lips. I walked over to Jay and smiled.
“Last one in’s a loser,” I said while pushing him. I took off running toward the lake.
Jay flew past me in a blur still wearing his teeshirt. This was the playful Jay I had known for most of my life. Just as he launched himself off the dock with a yell and a huge splash while I stood with my feet in the water.
“I kicked your butt,’ Jay yelled from the lake. “As usual.”
“Nope. You lose and you’re the loser. I got into the lake before you did. Look at my feet. Ha.” I said while sticking my tongue at Jay
Jay came walking out of the water walking directly toward me. Water spilling off his nicely shaped body.
“Loser, huh. You think I’m a loser.”
“Well the rules of the game are pretty clear. Let me think here. It went something like ‘Last one in’s a’ . . .” I screamed as Jay grabbed me and cradled me in his arms. “Don’t do it!” I threatened.
“I know what you’re thinking.” I wrapped my arms around Jay’s neck.
“What am I thinking?” Jay asked with a smile.
“You’re thinking that if I give you a little kiss that you won’t throw me in,” I said while placing a hand on each of Jay’s cheeks.
“Actually I wasn’t thinking that but that does have some very interesting advantages over what my plan was.”
“What was your plan?” I asked still holding my hands to Jay’s cheeks.
“Let’s try yours first.”
With my lips inches from Jay’s lips I stopped and started first at Jay’s lips and then into his eyes.
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“Yes, I’m sure.”
I closed the distance between our lips and let the softness of my lips meet his. Our mouths opening just slightly as his tongue flicked into my mouth. Jay’s arms squeezing me to his chest with each movement of our lips.
Time paused while we kissed and the sounds of the lake and woods were gone. There was only us standing there in the water.
“How was that?” I asked while staring into Jay’s eyes.
Clearing his throat Jay smiled, “That was pretty freaking amazing.” He paused and with a twisted smiled and continued. “But it’s not going to save you. Really? Loser? You think I’m a loser? See that’s not fair. I ran off the dock and did a great dive into the water. All you did was dip your cute little toes in.
“No, no, no! Jay don’t do it,” I pleaded while trying squirm out of his grasp.
Jay’s face glowed with a smile as he started walking into the water carrying me.
“How about this. I’ll give you another kiss, anything.”
“Whoa. That’s interesting. Anything?” Jay said while giving a little squeeze to my butt.
“Oh my God. You so bad,” I said with my mouth wide open.
Jay dipped my butt into the water.
“Wait! Wait. Please. If I’m going to get thrown in I want to do something first.”
I pulled my face up Jay’s and placed my lips against his again. We kissed for a long time until I slowly separated us.
“Okay. I’m ready now. I regret that I will be thrown into the depths. Lost for eternity to the world,” I said with a grand flourish of my arms.
“Oh jeesh. You see I was going to let you go free after that last kiss but the theatrics,” Jay stopped shaking his head side to side. “The theatrics just isn’t working.”
Jay fell forward toward me and the lake taking both of us under the water.
