gone down to Sigon for the weekend. I had a good time and stayed at
the president hotel in the Cholon district. (All spelling the best I
can do.) On Sunday I was drinking in the bar on the 24th floor and
talking to this little whore about an all nighter. We were just
getting to price when the lights went out. Candles were lit and the
party went on. After a while word came that a power station had been
hit and they were closeing the bar. Without an elivator we'd have to
walk down. We took candles and started down the stairs. That is when
I found out there was no building between the 3rd floor and the 24th.
No floors, walls nothing. Just these stairs without even a hand rail
leading down into the darkness lit only by candles. When the war
started they stopped building and all that was finished was the first
3 floors. My gal and I made it. I got up earlie to catch a flight
back to Cu Chi. I walked back to Tan San Nut bace. No cabs anyplace
and the streets were empty. There was an open place at the main gate
where 4 or 5 streets came togeather at the gate. When I got to the
gate the guard said "Only millitary on the bace today" I told him I
had to get on the bace to get back to Cu Chi. He repeted "Only
millitary on the bace today,SIR!" and pointed his gun at me. He went
on to tell me I'd best get going as they were expecting to get hit at
any time. I took off walking across the open space and got almost to
the street when the VC opened fire from all of the streets. The bace
returned fire at once and there was a whole lot more noise comming
from the bace then there was from the street so I took off up the
street charging the VC. The only hole in that plan was that I was the
only son of a bitch in that gun fight without a gun! Hell I didn't
have a pocket knife! I did a broken field run up this street hugging
the walls. I jumped over a low wall on top of a VC but by the time he
got up I was long gone. I had seen a guy that worked for the same
company I did on a balcony on my way to the bace. I got that far and
got down between a wall and the door and yelled "HAY MOTHERFUCKER
COME DOWN AND LET ME IN" He answered "In a minuet!" I said "THAT
WILL BE TOO LONG I"LL BE GONE BY THEN!!" He opened the door and we
spent the day drinking beer and watching the war go up and down the
street. About dark it got quiet and I made my way to the Milan hotel.
Two days later I got back to Cu Chi.
