south as you can go in Africa it looked like a medium sized town in New
England. A modern part plus a lot of older houses and buildings.
One of the first things done when you reach port is to take out the
trash that has accumulated since the last time you had a chance. Two "mess
cooks" started down the gangway carrying trash cans and were stopped by armed
guards and told one of then couldn't come off the ship. He was black you
see and they didn't allow blacks in Cape Town. If blacks wanted to go
ashore they had to get on a boat on the other side of the ship and be
taken to a black town out side of Capetown. They were told also that
this was not a good idea either because if they talked about their life
of freedom in the us, even small freedoms like being able to go into
white towns they were braking the law and could get 20yr to life in
Not much fun if your black but being white it was a great place.
The first day I was eating in a restaurant with friends and struck up a
conversation with some girls at the next table. We were ask to a party
that night and went. The party was like a party any where except we were
treated like movie stars. It was like a dream. I went home with a girl
that was blond and as good looking as I have ever been with. She thought
I was wonderful and almost had me believing that too.
The next day we took a cable car up to the top of a mountain that over
looks the town. This thing is 1000ft in the air at some points and once
your up there there is no other way down. There was a bar up there or I
may well still be up there.
We spent that night together and the next she had to work.
I wanted her address but she would not give it to me. It seems she was
engaged and her boyfriend would not like it. Turns out he knew about us
and was one of the men at the party. She told him she wanted to spend
the two days "With the American" as she had never had another man except
him and wanted to before they were married. I was safe because I was
going to be gone and she would never see me again.
The last night there I got bad bad drunk and when I came to we were out
to sea on our way to Durban. I had got into a fight and I am sure lost.
I don't remember the fight but it is imposable the other guy lost. My head was swelled up as big as a basket ball. Nose busted, teeth missing and my little toe
looked like it had been bit. My shoes were missing so that could be. I
didn't go ashore in Durban. I was still hurting too bad.
