i was running out of space on my boot drive (ftp drive is almost empty). so I thought I would get a larger drive and as i always try to do with electronics, i purchased a large hard drive(ATA133, 300 gig,7200 spin, 16 meg cache) looking toward the future when i will need it.
i get home and put the drive in thinking this is the same as any disk swap. put in cd-rom, boot to the cdrom and copy my files over. tried to boot the new drive and it tells me "invalid disk". i got out the instructions and found that i need sp-1.
so through the gracious internets i upgraded to sp-2 and read further into the instructions and saw it had a disk copy feature in windows (cool i thought - stupidly). I rebooted my computer and loaded the software that came with the drive (stupid - should have known better). clicked the shortcut the installer made on my desktop (again- not smart). read the info, navigated the windows and screens of information and told it to copy the disk ( dumbest part ). i let it copy all 112 gig of drive and i was impressed. i thought it had worked (stupid me).
i reboot my computer and boot from that drive (by pressing f11, i can select what drive to boot from on my pc). the computer boots great, system is all there. i was clicking here and there amazed at how fast it was.
then i went to hook the drive the ftp runs off of to the system again (did not want to loose that so i took that drive out while i was copying drives). i noticed that the letters were not right. i was booting off of F:?
well thats not right. so i change it too C:. ( can you see where i am going with this?)
when i rebooted i removed the old drive, and as a result, the machine would not boot at all.
i then plugged my old boot drive back in and tried to reboot from that. it came up all right, i had no cdroms and the hard drives were duplicated. meaning i had C:,D:,E:,F:.
c: was a duplicate of e:
d: was a duplicate of E:
no DVD players show up in control panel and i only have 2 hard drives plugged in?
i only have to hard drives, a DVD burner and a DVD player installed?
this went on for a couple of weeks, trying this and that to try and save the system. i would copy the drive and spend a couple of nights either trying to repair the original or the copy before i said the hell with it and just got an old drive and made a fresh install, upgraded it. got the drivers for my hardware and just plain 'ol reinstalled windows.
i then ghosted( was getting smarter) that drive to the new one. rebooted to the new drive and saw that all was good.
i then shut down, rebooted my old drive, backed up "MY DOCS" and some special folders that i have to a friends spare drive ( despate at this point, i was borrowing drives ).
i then booted the new drive and restored what was there.
thats when i started reistalling software. hours and hours of reinstalling software. i am still not done re-installing software.
it feels good to be back!
