The purpose of TDOR is to raise public awareness of hate crimes against transgendered people and to honour their lives that might otherwise be forgotten. It was set up in honour of Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.
This year will mark the 14th Annual event and you can participate in a number of ways. Events may range from social meets to discuss problems and outline ways to tackle hate crime and transphobia, to candle lit vigils and demonstrations. Search online for a vigil near you, or hold one yourself.Say a prayer, may the victims rest in peace, their loved ones find strength and the perpetrators brought to justice. Most importantly become informed on the transgender community and the issues they face, help raise awareness and find it in your heart to understand and accept differences amongst our society, people are people and we all deserve to live free from hate, violence and injustice.I ask that you do your part to mark this occasion in any way you can.
I read through the details of the victims from the 'Remembering Our Dead Project' and the nature of their deaths deeply saddened and shocked me. The fact that there is such brutality targeted at this community is unthinkable, and yet there is very little media coverage of this. I can't imagine the discrimination and suffering faced by this community, let alone the ending of a life so young due to such intolerance and hatred.
Let's hope more is done about this issue by our leaders, now is a great time to write a letter to you representative urging them to look at the issue more seriously.“As a community, it is important that we all communicate and help to resolve this problem by liaising with local and national government and law enforcement to help to tackle hate crime towards trans people." - Wipe Out Transphobia
