Check out a site called
There is a forum called The Men's Clubhouse. Look for topics regarding Alpha and Beta traits. Offers a unique perspective regarding why differences between Men and Women are natural and healthy.

Any character that he portrays is what i myself would define as a real man.
A real women on the otherhand, tough one to define. Women are allowed to be many different things and still be considered "woman".

I would define men and women by their respective genitalia...it's one thing that is what it is. Can you change it surgically? Sure....
If you got a twig and berries, I'd call you a dude, even if you don't feel like it on the inside. If you're rollin' with the muff taco and a pair of fun bags, I'd refer to you as a chick, even if you don't feel like it on the inside. I know it's not PC...but....how would all my non-fans on this site feel if I insisted that everyone consider me a really nice non-offensive guy because that's how a I feel like I am on the inside? Or demand that I be referred to as Asian or African American because that's what I feel I am on the inside, despite me being clearly not on the exterior?

The man is a hunter - and the traits that follow should be evident in him (strong, dominant, capable of looking after himself and whoever he is with). So in a modern context, the man should be there to support the woman.
The woman is the gatherer and carer. In return for the man's support, she provides a support of her own - her more gentle nature should be soothing to him, and she can give him clarity and organisation when things get out of hand. These are the roles she would also display in motherhood.
Everything else that people perceive to be masculine and feminine are just social constructs, with little practical purpose.

That might be the funniest thing I've read all day. Bravo, Alien.
I was going to say something about the roles of men and women in primitive societies and how they relate to today, but I see that marshmarsh47 did that already (good answer, by the way). So I guess I'll just give a stupid, smart-ass response.
A real man is a guy who can beat me in a game of Street Fighter II Turbo on the Super Nintendo and a real woman is me making him a ham sammich afterwards.

A provider & protector , willing to put his life on the line for those who depend on him , esp his woman , whom he worships only 2nd to God .
A real woman , caring nurturing , able to love with her entire being .
Tender enough to calm her frightened child & tough enough to take any & all hardships without breaking .
My take on the concept , but I'm old school & others might call my POV dated & maybe it is >:]

I've always hated the idea of gender being such a huge impact. I see parents who freak out if their son plays with a doll, or if their daughter plays with fire truck. For god sakes people are people that's all that matters.
