The Problem with PM's Not PM's they're chats
Posted Thu Nov 26, 2009 03:24 AM
We're all used to the high limits of the old VB system and while possibly it is simply an oversight or error by the admin staff / mod staff that it is as low as 50, but that is not what I am here to debate. This is more of an educational thing to explain how to use PM's so that even with a low limit like 50 you can actually send an infinite number of PM's (let's start calling these chats, k).
Just like the old system the way a forum program joins to people together in a PM is by creating a private thread (IP calls these "chats"). You are currently limited to participating in 50 chats (again not for debate here) and people are freaking out cause they can't send a new one. That can be fixed, but the way the system is designed to be used is if say I wanted to chat with you .... and I have no personal threads linked to me, I would create one and send it to you. You would receive it and possibly respond in that private "chat". This would work back and forth for days, weeks or whatever.
Eventually I might want to message you again in the future, so let's say I do. I have two options to create a new chat or use the existing one that I am already linked to. If you choose to create a new one, your now using 2 of your available chats and the messages go through as normal again until that chat is forgotten by both parties and new ones started. This won't be a problem until one of you hit the magic limit number (I am going to stop listing a number here because the number doesn't matter). Then you con't create "new" private chats.
Well that sucks, but not really, because you can still message your friend, by using one of the existing chats you already have opened between the two of you and you can keep chatting away happily. And this can currently work with up to 50 people (and more cause if you want you can group people together and all of you can chat in your private threads).
The 50 limit is not set to the amount of PM's you can have but to how many "chats" you can be linked to. You can send 1 billion individual PM's if you want, but not outside of 50 chats.
So what am I saying if you have more than 50 chats open right now, don't go delete crazy (like I did whoops) just yet this can be resolved. If you want to chat with someone use the existing chats you have with that person and send them a message as you always would. The search engine here is mighty powerful if you have 7500 chats, that should help narrow it down.
disclaimer time :
I am not sure how clear this is, I know it's not in the right forum and I am not a mod so please I'm just trying to explain how the IP chat system works over VB's PM system. The limited number of chats isn't to be debated here, it has been brought to the attention of the mods in the issues tracker and will be resolved by them and the admins as they see fit. If you have any questions on how this works please post them here or hit me in the shout box and I will be happy to help (again not a mod, ask them first, I just thought I would help them with this transition).

If the person you are sending to has over their limit they cannot accept anymore. They would have to find one of their old chats and send you a message from it to reconnect you to it.

This has been sorted with a much higher limit (it's now 5k for members)
Full information available Here
These are starting to cause a bit of confusion with senders who are storing theirs. If you close (delete it) from your side it closes the chat for both sides. The sender can no longer reply to the chat and receives a box that says "you cannot reply" to this.
New Info :
If you see in a PM chat that you cannot reply, it is because it has been closed on the other person's end and you will need to start a new chat to send them a message. If you speak regularly with someone via PM you should consider leaving them open until you or the other person starts a new chat.

See I told you I am not a very good writer
Okay basically if I PM you it creates a thread (like any other on the forums, just like this one even) except it is private between a couple of people.
If there are two people (you and me) messaging back and forth in a private thread and you delete it, it closes the thread and I cannot respond to it anymore. Just like if this thread were to be closed by a mod, no one can respond to it, it's the same with PM chats.
Hope this helps

Like I said I am terrible at words, that's why I concentrate on just figuring things out.

that way you can use the thread if you like or they can send a new one.
I think people were panicking thinking that they had been blocked as friends if they saw a red X and couldnt reply or pm anymore.
excellent PR, you've done a really good job explaining for those that couldnt get it to work
