Vaginismus (vaginal pain during sex) Anyone have any experience with this?

I have experienced this with two other women before. The first one was a long-term girlfriend of mine, so we just persistently tried to quell the pain over several weeks. It worked to an extent, but she never completely got over the pain. The second one was with a woman who had just broken up with her long-term girlfriend, and she hadn't had vaginal penetration for a number of years. I think that, over that amount of time, her vaginal muscles either atrophied or contracted somehow.
The woman from last night (a current friend with benefits) seems to be in the same boat, except a lot more extreme. The last time she had sex before she met me was something along the lines of a couple of years ago. I did some research today and discovered that she might have a condition called "vaginismus." Does anyone have any experience with this? Can anyone shed some light on this situation? Has anyone here ever had this condition and treated it somehow without sex therapy?
What do you guys think I can do?

They can treat it using items to slowly relax and open the vaginal ring of muscles. Its this ring that tightens and spasms upon attempted penetration.
I'm not sure how common it is, i'm surprised you've met so many ladies with it.
I hope you get the help and answers you are looking for, I didnt want to read and run.
