too shy and awkward

I'm not particularly looking for anything special, just some fun and experience. Pretty desperately which I guess doesn't help. I feel I should've got over this ten years ago though. Any ideas...

Ok, so traveling might be out of the question. If you really want to step out of your shell you could take dancing lessons. I know, I know. But consider this. Since fewer men like to dance, any type of dancing class or venue will be heavily skewed toward women. They will love you. It won't be easy though. If dancing is out of the question, try cooking, gardening, photography, etc.
You can also try some of the advice from some of the the more ethical dating coaches. Skip the canned, memorized approaches and the "psychology" stuff and pay attention to the stuff on body language (yours especially) and eye contact and playfulness.
Also, you have to come to terms with the kind of woman you can attract vs the kind of woman you are attracted to. If the two are misaligned then it will be harder. People are entitled to have preferences of course, but be aware that if you're only going after a certain narrow type of gal, the chances are that everybody else is too.
Since you don't want something serious, there are a lot of older women (say late 30's) who would be very happy to have a fling with a youngin' such as you. Yes they might have kids, etc but again if you're looking for a fling, all that shouldn't matter, I hope But you still need to have some kind of game to let them know. Or you could try to meet them online.
On the other hand if you're interested in only younger gals like most men are, you'd better either be willing to compete, travel or pay.

I was also going to suggest a fling with an older woman... and btw, you don't look bad at all...
