Birth Control Warning My bad recent experience

I had a very recent very serious health problem due to using the Nuva ring birth control and I would like to just let others know so if you have any similar symptoms and take any form of hormonal birth control this may help you get the help you need asap!
I took the pill way back in my early 20's then went on to have kids and chose to use a non hormonal IUD for 5 years...now that was removed and I have had always pretty evil pms each month so I thought well I'll go back to a hormonal method and since I'm bad for remembering pills each day I spoke to my dr about the nuva ring since it's inserted and left for 3 weeks..well after going over my health which was perfect and I'm a non smoker too, only 32 as well she said I could use the nuva ring and do 3 rings in a row for 3 skipped periods then have a period and then go do another 3 rings (3 weeks per ring so 9 weeks total) so therefore I'd be skipping my period and skipping the nasty pms each month. Funny enough I'm not even sexually active at the moment so I was basically using the birth control for it's other effects like mentioned with the pms. So I had done 2, 3 week cycles and was starting my third..I was about a week into my third ring and I got a extreme cramp in my left side of my butt cheek. It felt like a muscle cramp lump and it stayed with me for 6 days, I ignored it as a cramp and did some stretches and it seemed to go away. Well a few days later I start having issues with breathing, gasping for air and feeling winded from just walking through the house, my vision is slightly blurred at times and I feel like I'm suffocating slowly yet I put off rushing to the dr..thinking perhaps I'm getting allergies or something..that night after a few days of this hard to breathe pattern I get this knife like pain through my upper right hand chest/shoulder, it's very painful and I have a shitty sleep propped up to deal with the pain. I called the dr in the morning and got fit in, I'm not a person who goes to the dr unless I have to, I'm not a paranoid health freak either so this pain made me think it's serious. I go in and get checked all is normal with my blood pressure ect...I then said could it be a blood clot? I have just been on hormonal bc for 8 weeks or so now...the dr says highly unlikely but sends me for the test just to rule it out and stop me from worrying about that...guess what the test was positive, I had to drive myself to emergency and got ct scanned and had multiple blood clots in my lungs! The dr in emergency told me I was smart to go in and ask about it cause 10% die from this same thing, I could of literally dropped dead any time. Long story short, I spent 5 days, 4 nights in the hospital in some bad pain for 2 of those days out of it and miserable. The dr's were baffled why I would of developed clots for my age and good over all health...guess what the only option is the damn birth control...so now I'm never able to take any hormones of any sort for life, on blood thinners for at least 3-6 months and have to get weekly blood taken all because of what I thought was safe birth control.
I'm not saying this to bash birth control, I in my own mind think that maybe the ring is to much for the body as far as hormones since it's a "slow release" method but always in your body for that 3 weeks who knows how much it's releasing right.
I just didn't think blood clots from bc were that common and it' happened to me so I just want to let others know if you even think you have one or have anything that feels like a cramp or piercing pain anywhere in your body (they almost always start in your leg though) get it checked out asap, ask to get a d dimer blood test to check the blood for clotting...after reading the statistics a lot of people die unnecessarily from clots that went undiscovered. And bc can cause them so if after reading my long story someone realizes they may have one and gets help I'm glad. I have 3 young kids and I was terrified I may take a turn for the worst and die and not see them grow up...so I know bc is a common thing but take the warnings about it seriously...I never really did and came way to close to losing it all.

I recently learned during some lab tests that I have a protein S deficiency which predisposes me to clots. 7 years ago brother mysteriously got a clot in his leg out of nowhere. So it looks like it runs in the family. I would have never known, but now I'm glad I do so that I won't attempt to take hormones anymore.
But I was on birth control pills in the past...so I guess I was lucky that nothing happened.

Thank you Q, you never think it will happen till it does so from now on I will never be using anything with additional hormones ever again
Cocoa, well I'll be getting tested for genetic issues once I'm done my time on the thinners...see if it's something in my body like you tested for that helped cause it...it's scary how easily it can happen so it's a good thing you know now and can avoid triggers
Backcheck, I'm not sure on the kids situation..I have 3 with my ex husband...but I'm on the fence as far as 1 more...crazy as it sounds what if I meet the guy of my dreams and we get married and want 1 child together? So I would like to keep that option open for a few more years at least before closing my uterus down altogether So I'll do the IUD it's good for 4-5 years and no hormones along with using condoms...see what the next couple years hold for me as far as a new serious relationship and go from there. I am going to ask about that other procedure though you mentioned..definitely sounds like a good thing since I've been told getting your tubes tied can sometimes cause heavier periods afterward so it would be nice to learn all the other options available
