I'm not sure exactly how the system works, and I've never had any experience with this situation/issue, but I'd imagine the length of his "sentences" depends on how severe his disorder is and how severe his behavior is. If he has attempted to kill someone, then he's obviously a danger to other people - especially when he's off his medication. However, I don't know that a person who's confirmed to have a mental illness or disorder like this would be put in jail. I would imagine that he'd be taken to a psychiatric hospital or somewhere similar. I'm not sure how the length of time spent in a psychiatric hospital is determined. And if he's not violent when he's on his medication, then there could be no reason to continue to detain him when he's on his medication. Tough to say whether or not his sentences should be longer, TBH, because there are many factors to consider.
