Also hygiene is important, make sure you thoroughly clean your toys both after and before use. Also as stated above, lots and lots of lube.
When that doesnt quite do it for you anymore, you can graduate to something a lil harder and/or bigger.
I am currently eyeing some of the prostate massagers that Tenyn has talked about in his posts

Start with some kind of small and/or slim toy. Most of the smaller anal plugs will work fine, especially the jelly ones. Small vibrating eggs, slim vibrators (like G-spot or prostate massagers) and maybe even the smaller beads should work OK, but make sure there is something attached to them so you can pull them out, and prevent them from being swallowed up. Plenty of lube is very important, but try and stay away from a lot of the "sensation" lubes (the ones that feel hot, or cold, or tingly, just stick with simple, straight forward lube). If you decide to go with some kind of impromptu/DIY toy, stick with something that is pretty big on the other end, like a brush handle.
Slowly is a key thing here. As soon as something feels uncomfortable, or won't move, stop. Just hold position right where you are, and don't move. Just start relaxing and get accustomed to it, then move on. Depending on the size, it may take a minute or two before you can comfortably fit the thing in there properly. Patience is very, very important.
Cleanliness is also going to be important. Go to the bathroom before you do anything, and if you can, give yourself an enema. Eat plenty of fiber, too. I also recommend, to help with clean-up afterwards, use a condom on the toy. Makes cleaning easier, a bit less messy, and can help prevent discoloration of your toy. If it's an impromptu toy, it'll help deal with the potentially rough edges and not-so-smooth surfaces, and prevent injury. You may want to either do this with you ending up in a shower by the end, only because sometimes lube gets around, or may not be some easy to wipe up. I find the particular KY-like jelly I use to be a little resistant to simple toilet paper, so soap is called for, and it's just easier to take a shower.
In my experience, especially with the non-rigid toys, it's easier if you apply the lube to your anus, rather than slathering the toy and your anus in it. Otherwise things just slide around everywhere and you spend more time fighting with the damn thing than you do enjoying it.
Also, shop around online. Some of the online stores have customer reviews of items, and should hopefully give you some more insight into any toy that's caught your eye.

Also start with a small size. We do carry different sizes, and I recommend that you start with a small size. If you think you can take a bigger size anal plug, then maybe get a package of 5 plugs that increase in size from 1 inch to 1.25 inch and so on....
Since you are a beginner, I would recommend the Ease In Anal Dilator Kit available on our website. This is 5 plugs ranging in size as I said above.
If not look around and you will find the right one that fits you. PM me anytime, I can usually pinpoint you to the right product with just 2 or 3 quick questions.
